Wzmocnienie czy osłabienie suwerenności państwowej w kontekście integracji europejskiej w opinii wybranych polskich partii politycznych

Strengthening or weakening of State sovereignty in the context of the European integration process – opinions of selected Polish political parties

Abstract

Sovereignty as the fundamental attribute of a State has been the pivotal principle for Central-and-Eastern Europe countries that regained independence after 1989, setting themselves free from the Soviet hegemony. Quite naturally, the same aspect became very sensitive in the context of their involvement in the European integration. Membership in the UE implies surrendering some of prerogatives of the State to the Community. The article presents political parties’ attitudes towards the influence the UE membership has upon the State sovereignty, expressed in Polish Sejm after the parliamentary elections in 2005. The ruling parties have revealed Euroscepticism (Liga Polskich Rodzin, Samoobrona) or moderate Eurooptimism (PIS), whereas the opposition parties have been pro-European (Platforma Obywatelska, SLD). Since the first of May 2004 Poland has been the EU Member State. It is now up to political forces to authenticate Poland as true and reliable partner in the present process of building the common Europe.
