We Are Now the True Europeans: The Phantasmatic Revenge of the Periphery
Abstract
This article uses the example of peripheral countries in Central and Eastern Europe to analyse the causes and consequences of contemporary anti-liberal and anti-Western tendencies. It focuses on current political and cultural issues, particularly culture wars and the growing wave of right-wing and nationalist populism. These issues are examined as manifestations of confrontation between peripheral localities and the discursive and symbolic domination of today’s global centres. After considering how the ideological and symbolic supremacy of the West led to a policy of imitation in post-communist peripheral countries and to the replacement of communist orthodoxy with liberal orthodoxy, the article explains how a radical departure from the policy of imitation and modernisation discourse occurred on Europe’s periphery. In other words, the article explains why right-wing populists challenged a strategy that liberals considered to be the fastest and most obvious path to accelerated modernisation. It discusses the right-wing strategy of constructing a home- grown image of Eastern Europe and criticising the imagined West, and examines how such a strategy shifts the terrain of political contestation from the pursuit of recognition to the defence of identities and engagement in culture wars over the definition of reality.
