Uwarunkowania współpracy gospodarczej między Polską Rzecząpospolitą Ludową i Wspólnotami Europejskimi w przededniu transformacji ustrojowej w Polsce (1985–1990)

The conditions of economic co-operation between the Polish People’s Republic and the European Community’s countries shortly before the political system transformation in Poland (1985–1990)

Abstract

The beginning of closer cooperation between the Polish People’s Republic and the European Community’s member countries occurred in the second half of the 1980s. The im provement of relations with Western countries became possible due to the changes which took place in the leader ship of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. They were possible as a result of Mikhail Gorbachev’s team coming to power in the Soviet Union, which started reconstruction of the Soviet system and State, which is now known in the world as „perestroika”. Due to the normalisation of relations between the East and the West, the Polish People’s Republic could sign the first really broad economic and trade agreement with the European Economic Community in 1988. This article pertains to the history and political conditions of cooperation between the Polish People’s Republic and the European Economic Community after the World War 2. The author focuses on the economic and trade cooperation, which at that time constituted the only possible area of cooperation between Western countries and Poland as a socialistic country. The article describes in detail The Agreement between The Polish People’s Republic and The European Economic Community on the Trade and Economic Cooperation from 19 September 1989 which is one of the most important economic agreements signed by Poland after the World War 2.
