Sweden’s Integration Into the European Single Market: Legal, Trade, and State Aid Aspects

Abstract

By joining the European Union in 1995 along with Finland and Austria, Sweden completed the process of integration into European economic structures that it had initiated in 1960 as part of EFTA. More than 25 years following accession, it is worth assessing Sweden’s position in the EU. Accordingly, this study will aim to determine the degree of Sweden’s integration into the European Single Market. To this end, the following will be analysed: the evolution of the level of the implementation deficit of EU directives in the Swedish legal system; changes in the geographic structure of Sweden’s intra- and extra-EU trade; and the degree of approximation of the intensity and structure of state aid provided in Sweden versus the EU average. The study found that Sweden is still in the process of European integration with respect to legal alignment. It is definitely more strongly aligned in commercial terms, mainly relying on sub-suppliers from the single European market, yet it is somewhat weaker in bringing its state aid structure closer to achieving EU goals.
