Sektor przedsiębiorstw mikro, małych i średnich w krajach Unii Europejskiej

Micro, small and medium-sized enterprises in the European Union countries

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to emphasise the role of SMEs and their importance for economies’ growth and to present the most recent statistical data about this sector. Experience of highly developed countries proves that small and medium sized enterprises influence upon national economies is very strong, especially nowadays, as most European countries face the problem of high unemployment and SMEs provide the largest source of new jobs. Moreover, their eagerness to enrich the range of products and services and be innovative makes them contribute to economic integration in Europe. SMEs also generate most of export and c. 50% of European GDP. Considering the role and importance of SMEs, public authorities should improve their operating conditions, mainly in terms of finance and institutional infrastructure. Both Polish and foreign authorities seem to appreciate the relationship between development of SMEs and economic growth. Unless adequate, integrated forms of support for SMEs are in place, it seems unlikely to solve many social problems or achieve true regional development.
