Europa jako wspólna przestrzeń społeczna – metodologiczne kwestie badania społeczeństwa i integracji społecznej w Europie na przykładzie mobilności przestrzennej

Europe as a common social space – methodological aspects of researching the European society and social integration in Europe. The example of geographical mobility.

Abstract

Integration is a key term to understanding of social processes in the contemporary Europe. One of the newest concepts of integration is Beck’s notion of horizontal Europeanization which considers geographical mobility of people within the EU as a driving force of this process. This perspective is linked closely to the transnational approaches in migration studies. Against this theoretical background, the paper presents the concept of transnational migration and focuses on its methodological postulate to move social sciences beyond the so-called methodological nationalism. It discusses the influence of the transnational approaches on the concepts of social Europe and it critically engages with the concept of horizontal Europeanization, in particular, the notion of transnational social spaces. Moreover, it is argued that the analytical power of this concept stems from its critic of how sociology understands societies. The paper formulates some key methodological postulates which the future European studies should be concerned with when analyzing its society; and puts forward a number of concrete research questions. It gives a particular example of the current migration process between Poland and Great Britain to illustrate how these postulates and questions can be embedded in social research and theory.
