Energy Transition in the Context of the Determinants of Long-Term Economic Growth in the European Union

Abstract

Energy is a resource essential to the economic growth of any economy, and energy transition can play a significant role in fostering such growth. The purpose of this article is to examine the European Union (EU) energy transition in the context of the determinants of economic growth in the Member States of the EU. In order to achieve this aim, a descriptive and analytical approach is employed. The study includes a synthetic theoretical introduction on the importance of energy in economic growth processes, as well as an analysis of EU documents and strategies relating to the directions of the EU’s energy transition. In addition, a review of the scientific literature on the relationship between economic growth and greenhouse gas emissions, viewed in terms of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) concept, is conducted. The empirical part of the study is based on an analysis of secondary data for European Union Member States covering the period from 2013 to 2023. The dataset includes indicators of economic growth, greenhouse gas emissions, the share of renewable energy sources in final energy consumption, and the energy intensity of economies. This approach made it possible to identify trends and variations among EU countries.
