Susanna Cafaro

Biography

Ph.D., is a full professor of European Union law at Università del Salento (Italy) where she holds a Jean Monnet Chair (2023–2026), and whose title is “European Supranational Democracy Model: a Lab for the World”; this is a follow-up of a previous JM Chairdedicated to “Legal Theory of European Integration: a Supranational democracy Model?” (2020–2023). Since 2018, she has organised the Supranational Democracy Dialogue, an annual event that brings together scholars from all backgrounds, NGO leaders and political activists, international officers, businessmen, and innovative thinkers to discuss democratic solutions to humanity’s major challenges. Professor Cafaro is a member of the editorial boards and scientific committees of several journals and book series on European and international law in addition to being the author and editor of more than 90 academic publications focusing on democracy beyond borders, the EU’s institutional system, the European economic and monetary union, the EU’s external relations, global economic governance, and Euro-Mediterranean relations. Among other professional positions, she has been an Independent Legal Expert for International and European Law at the European Parliament (EPRS) since 2017, was appointed to the Scientific Committee established by the Italian Government for the Conference on the Future of Europe (2021–2022); is a former Vice-President of the Italian Society for International and European Law (2019-2021); and was the recipient of a Fellowship, as a senior researcher, in the ECB Legal Research programme (2021).
