Heikki Hellman

Biography

Docent at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences, Tampere University. He forged a long career as a journalist and cultural editor in Helsingin Sanomat, Finland’s leading daily, while also undertaking his doctoral studies at the University of Tampere, Finland, and the University of Westminster, London. Later, he served as Professor of Practice in Journalism at the University of Tampere and, then, as Dean and Senior Research Fellow at its School of Communication, Media and Theatre. For fi ve years, he also served as a member on the YLE (Finnish Broadcasting Company) Board of Executives. His research interests include media policy, media competition, journalism research and audience research. His major monograph, Koko illan ilo? (2012), deals with the commercialisation of television and the liberalisation of media policy in Finland. He has published dozens of research articles in edited volumes and journals including the European Journal of Communication, the International Communication Gazette, the Journal of Media Economics, Journalism Practice, Media, Culture & Society, Radio Journal, and Television & New Media.
