Arto Nokkala

Doctor of Social Sciences, Lt. Col. (GSO) Ret., is Adjunct Professor (Title of Docent) of strategic studies and security policy at the Finnish National Defence University (FNDU). He is also an independent researcher. Dr. Nokkala has published monographs and articles on security and strategic studies, foreign, security and defence policy, military politics, armed forces in wide security, conscription, the professionalisation of the military, northern regional security, and nonoffensive defence. He is a former Director of the Office of Strategic Studies at the Finnish War College. After an officer’s career in the Finnish Defence Forces, he worked at the University of Tampere as a Senior Assistant and Senior Research Fellow and was a visiting researcher at the Tampere Peace Research Institute (TAPRI). He has also lectured in many other universities. He was the Chair of the Finnish Geopolitical Association between 2020–2022.
